Furnace Terminology…

AFUE represents the furnace gas efficiency

1 stage furnace burner operates on high fire only.

2 stage furnace burner operates on low or high fire depending on demand, provides better comfort and efficiency by using only what is needed.

Multi-stage furnace burner automatically adjust in increments to provide the ultimate comfort and efficiency.

Standard blower motors use a typical 120v electrical circuit to operate, this is a standard efficiency motor (no longer available)

ECM Blower motors are more efficient than a standard 120v blower motor but not as efficient as the variable speed blower motor.

Variable-speed blower motors are the quietest and most efficient available in furnaces today.

When should I replace my furnace?

Think of your furnace as if it was a car, higher mileage and age means more wear and tear on all of the mechanical components and they may start to fail. Older furnaces run a greater risk of the heat exchanger developing leaks emitting hazardous carbon monoxide into your home.  Many home owners worry about the age of their furnace and decide to replace it and get new furnace installation before it fails in the middle of winter.  Some manufacturers build longer lasting furnaces than others so there is no set time for when you should get a new one, a good rule of thumb is to replace the off brand furnaces within 10-15 years while some of the better brands can go 20-25 years providing that expensive repairs don’t become necessary.  Always be sure to regularly have a professional check your furnace for safety.

1. Frequent Fixes

If you find yourself needing to call in experts for frequent repairs, or if the cost of the repairs is becoming too high, it may be time to consider replacing your furnace. This is because frequent repairs can indicate that your furnace is reaching the end of its lifespan and may not be able to keep up with your heating needs for much longer. Additionally, if the cost of repairs exceeds half the cost of a new furnace, it may be more financially sound to invest in a new furnace instead of continually repairing an aging system.

By replacing your furnace, you can ensure that your home stays warm and comfortable while also potentially saving money in the long run by having a more energy-efficient system.

2. Strange Noises

Although it is normal for your furnace to make some noise when turning on and off, unusual sounds like banging, rattling, or screeching may indicate a serious issue that requires attention. These problems can be expensive to repair, which is why it may be more beneficial to consider purchasing a new furnace.

By replacing an older furnace that makes loud or unusual sounds, you can avoid the costs of constant repairs and increase the energy efficiency of your home’s heating system. In addition, a new furnace can provide a more comfortable and reliable source of heat for your property.

3. High Energy Bills

If you’ve been experiencing consistently high energy bills, it may be a sign that it’s time to replace your furnace. While there are several factors that can contribute to high energy bills, an old or inefficient furnace is often the culprit.

Installing a new furnace can significantly reduce your heating bills, even if you maintain the same thermostat settings. This is because newer furnaces are designed to be much more efficient at producing heat from the fuel. For example, an older furnace with an 80% AFUE rating wastes 20% of the fuel it consumes, while a newer high-efficiency model with a 95% AFUE rating only wastes 5%.

Over the lifespan of your furnace, the savings in energy efficiency can really add up, helping you to save money on your energy bills and recoup the cost of your investment in a new furnace. If you’re tired of paying high energy bills every winter, it may be time to consider upgrading to a newer, more efficient furnace.

4. Less Comfort

As your furnace ages, its efficiency tends to decrease, resulting in reduced comfort. There are a few indicators that your furnace is struggling and may need repair or replacement. One sign is that it turns on and off too frequently, even with a regularly changed air filter. Another sign is when it blows cold air, despite having a clean filter. Difficulty regulating the temperature in your home is also a common indication of furnace issues. If you find yourself constantly adjusting the thermostat because your home is too cold, your furnace may be struggling to keep up with demand. These issues could all be signs that it’s time to consider replacing your furnace.

5. Change In Burner Flame Color

The flames from a properly functioning furnace should be blue, but if you notice yellow flames instead, this could indicate an issue with fuel efficiency. This could also result in the emission of harmful carbon monoxide, which poses a significant safety risk. A furnace with such issues should be immediately replaced to ensure the safety of your household.

How often should I service my furnace?

Manufacturers recommend that you service your furnace in Thornton, CO annually to ensure safety plus maintain reliability and efficiency. Newer furnaces have components such as flame sensors, burners etc., that will get dirty and cause failures.  As the furnace gets older the risk of the heat exchanger cracking and emitting carbon monoxide increases posing a safety hazard.

Rabbit Heating & Air offers a basic furnace safety inspection and cleaning to keep you safe and warm during the cold winter months.

6 additional factors to consider if it’s time for your home to get a furnace replacement.

  1. Cost of maintenance. The cost of maintaining your heating system will give you a good indication of whether it is cost effective to keep using your current model or opt for a newer one for your home. Although replacing a furnace in Denver can be pricey, an older heating system might not have the technology to keep your heating bills as low as possible and could be costing you more than necessary.
  2. Cost of repair. If your aging furnace requires repair and the cost is significant, it makes more sense to put that money toward a new furnace. It would be wiser to invest those dollars in a newer, more energy efficient system than spending them on a repair for an older system whose life span may be questionable. If you have a furnace that has required a lot of repairs in the recent past, that’s even more reason to consider a replacement.
  3. Changes in your home. Have you remodeled or added on to your existing square footage since your furnace was first installed? Your current unit may not be sufficient to effectively heat your revamped floor plan.
  1. Comfort level. As furnaces age, they must work harder to keep your home warm in the winter, sometimes running constantly, which can not only cause quite a hike in your heating bill but could affect your comfort level as well. A newer furnace installation can keep your home comfortable without working as hard as an older unit. This will extend the life of the furnace and save you money in the long run.
  2. Current AFUE ratings. Is your furnace up to code? Newer furnaces are required to have an AFUE rating of at least 78 percent. If your furnace has an AFUE rating lower than that, it is not only an indication of an older system, but it does not meet current industry standards, and your heating bills are undoubtedly higher than if you had a high-efficiency system.
  3. Chronic noises, smells, or rust. If you notice your furnace beginning to make strange noises, produce odd smells or show signs of rust, it’s time to replace it. Any of these conditions could be signs of an impending furnace failure.

Consider Replacing Other Systems at The Same Time

Replacing your furnace and air conditioner simultaneously can be a cost-effective solution that brings year-round energy savings. Consider replacing both systems together if your furnace and air conditioner are over 15 years old. Also, if you plan to install a high-efficiency air conditioner soon, it may not work efficiently with an older furnace. Upgrading to a smart thermostat to enhance your energy savings may also be challenging to work with older HVAC equipment. In addition, installing new HVAC systems can be a complicated process that requires professional installation. Replacing both systems at the same time can ensure you don’t have to worry about repairs or replacements in the near future. This proactive approach can save you money in the long run and improve your home’s energy efficiency, resulting in a more comfortable living environment. Contact your local HVAC specialist to discuss your options and determine the best solution for your home.

Furnaces normally last an average of 18 to 20 years, depending on whether it has been consistently and professionally maintained. However, just because you have an older furnace model doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced, as age isn’t the only factor that may signal a failing furnace. Furnace repairs and installations are always best when left to the professionals. If your furnace is showing signs of breaking down or giving out, give us a call.
